We are a married couple in our early 60’s and were planning a side trip to Kenya for about 5 days; July 30 – August 4, 2015. We’ll be coming from a 15 day Self-Drive safari in Tanzania that will include most of the Northern Circuit with another couple. Everything on the Tanzania side has been decided already. After dropping our departing fellow travelers at Kilimanjaro Airport we’ll have five more days for the Kenya side trip which will be just my wife and I.

Now here’s my dilemma: I was planning to drive cross-border at Holili/Taveta, Overnight near Tsavo West at Taita Hills on day 1, on to Mombasa for days 2, 3 & 4, then over to Nairobi day 5. Great plan, right? Then we started reading about the Kenya Coast travel advisories! I was looking forward to some relaxing beach time to unwind after 2 weeks in the bush. We’re definately having second thoughts about Mombasa (though I’ve always wanted to go there). Any suggestions about filling up that time? Our flights home are from Nairobi so we have to get there eventually.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time in the bush over the years; Kenya (1982-20 days), Zambia (1984-24 days), Botswana and South Africa (2013-16 days). I know from past experience that adding another 5 days wildlife viewing may be pushing it at our ages. Any reasonably priced “resorts” away from the coast that we should consider?
